  • Chemistry: Gaussian '03
Gaussian 03 is the latest in the Gaussian series of electronic structure programs. Gaussian 03 is used by chemists, physicists, and engineers for research in established and emerging areas of chemical interest, studying molecules and reactions of definite or potential interest, including both stable species and compounds which are difficult or impossible to observe experimentally, such as short-lived intermediates and transition structures, for example.

    Electronic Design: Motorola
With Linda's help, a parallel program for characterizing large semicustom standard-cell circuits has been implemented by Binay George, Sean Tyler, and Markus Wloka at Motorola Inc.'s Semiconductor Systems Design Technology Center in Tempe, AZ. Called the Entice program (for Energy and timing characterization environment), it is run on networked computers to deliver higher performance and new functions in simulation.

    Financial Analytics: Lehman Brothers
A wide variety of financial codes, such as portfolio optimization, mortgage-backed securities, hedging, global risk management, and fixed-income securities valuation, are remarkably well suited to network-based parallel computing. These codes are all quite compute-intensive, have modest communications requirements, and typically exhibit a great degree of independence among the computations they perform. For those in the financial community with compute-bound codes, current and future networks can clearly provide viable, cost-effective platforms for portable parallel computing. The LindaSpaces Computational Toolkit enables users to deploy parallel and distributed programs in an easy to use and robust fashion.

Petroleum Research & Exploration: Amerada Hess
Amerada Hess developed an application using Linda for Red Hat Linux that makes it possible for geologists to render detailed 3-D seismic images of sub-sea formations. The application was moved from an IBM SP2 to a 32-node Linux cluster, a move that saves Hess nearly $2M, according to Vic Forsyth, Amerada Hess's Houston-based manager of geophysical systems. "Without Linda, a rewrite would have been required that would have delayed implementation by months," said Forsyth.
